Mini dental implants are implants narrower than standard ones, usually under 3 mm wide, and their best-studied use is holding a loose lower denture in place. In the UK they are private, and the clinic prices we found start at £1,400 at one London clinic, with clinic pages putting the usual cost at about £500 to £1,200 per implant. This guide explains what they are, what they cost, what the research shows and when a standard implant is the better choice.
We checked every linked page in October 2026. Clinic pages are marketing as well as information. Use them as a guide when you compare quotes; the fee in your written treatment plan is what counts.
What are mini dental implants?
They are reduced-diameter implants. A 2026 systematic review of mini implants for lower dentures only included implants with a diameter under 3 mm, and the implants in its studies measured 1.8, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.4 mm. The same review says mini implants were introduced in 1996, are a viable option for patients with severe ridge resorption (a shrunken jaw ridge), and are considerably more cost-effective than standard implants.
UK clinics describe two main uses. Dental Implants London says mini implants may be considered for stabilising dentures or replacing teeth where space or bone volume is limited. Smile Cliniq says it places them to replace small teeth or secure a loose denture.
How much do mini dental implants cost in the UK?
These are the figures named clinics publish:
| Clinic | What the page publishes | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| Smile Cliniq (London) | Mini dental implants from £1,400 (or £50 per month) | A starting price; ask how many implants it covers. |
| Dental Implants London (South Kensington) | Smaller-diameter implants from £2,950 | Free 15-minute consultation to assess suitability. |
| Ardent Sidcup Dental Clinic | About £500 to £1,200 per implant in the UK; £2,000 to £4,500 or more to stabilise a denture | Says a denture often needs four to six implants, and the total includes refitting or making the denture. |
| UrgentCare Dental | £500 to £1,200 per mini implant; £1,000 to £4,000 for a set of 2 to 4 | Adds £200 to £500 to modify the denture. Its own standard implant price is £1,999. |
The number of implants drives the total. A per-implant price can look low, but a denture usually needs several implants plus work on the denture itself. Ask for the price of the whole plan.
How does that compare with standard implants?
UrgentCare Dental gives £1,500 to £3,500 per tooth for standard implants, and Dental Implants London lists a single standard implant from £2,950. For implant-retained dentures on standard implants, Dental Implants London starts at £4,995 (2 to 4 implants), and UrgentCare Dental gives £8,000 to £15,000 per jaw. How well do mini implants work?
For lower dentures, survival is high in the short term, but long-term data is thinner. The 2026 review included seven studies with 496 mini implants in 124 patients, all loaded straight away to hold a lower denture:
| Follow-up | Survival rate |
|---|---|
| 1 year | 96.77% |
| 24 months (three studies) | 94.4% |
| 36 months (two studies) | 94.77% |
The authors say the limited number of studies and the short follow-up mean longer, well-designed research is needed.
For longer follow-up, a retrospective study of mini implants supporting overdentures analysed 83 patients and 334 implants over a mean of 8.09 years. Cumulative implant survival at 15 years was 86.3%. Implants with a diameter below 2.5 mm had a significantly increased risk of failure, so ask what diameter your dentist plans to use.
When are mini implants a good choice?
The evidence is strongest for holding a lower denture. Both papers above studied overdentures, and the 2026 review calls immediately loaded mini implants a promising option for retaining lower dentures. A 2016 meta-analysis of implant-supported prostheses (not limited to mini implants) found that lower overdentures on one implant lost more implants than those on two, and on two more than on four, so the number of implants matters as well as their size.
Mini implants may also suit:
- **Narrow gaps or thin bone**, which Dental Implants London lists as a reason to consider them.
- **People who want to avoid a bone graft.** The 2026 review describes mini implants as a viable option for severe ridge resorption. Our bone graft guide explains the alternative.
When is a standard implant the better choice?
Ask your dentist to explain why a mini implant suits your case if the plan is anything other than holding a denture, because the research we found is mostly about lower dentures. The 15-year study found higher failure with the narrowest implants. For a single back tooth or a fixed bridge, ask for the standard implant option and its price as well, and compare. Our guides to implant vs bridge and All-on-4 cover the fixed options.
Are mini implants available on the NHS?
Rarely. The NHS says implants are usually only available privately, and that, although it is rare, they are sometimes available on the NHS for patients who cannot wear dentures for certain reasons, such as mouth cancer or an accident. NHS dentures are a Band 3 treatment, charged at £332.10 in England according to the NHS charges page.
Questions to ask before you book
- How many mini implants do I need, and what is the price for all of them?
- What diameter and brand are they?
- Is my existing denture adapted, or do I need a new one, and is that in the price?
- Would standard implants work for me, and what would they cost?
- What happens if an implant fails?
Anyone can search the General Dental Council register to check a dentist is registered, and in England the Care Quality Commission publishes practice inspection reports. Our finance guide and complications guide may also help.
Frequently asked questions
How much do mini dental implants cost in the UK?
Smile Cliniq in London starts at £1,400 and Dental Implants London at £2,950. Ardent Sidcup Dental Clinic and UrgentCare Dental both put the usual UK price at about £500 to £1,200 per implant. Stabilising a denture costs more in total because it needs several implants and work on the denture.
How wide are mini dental implants?
Under 3 mm. A 2026 systematic review used that cut-off, and the implants in its studies were 1.8 to 2.4 mm wide.
How long do mini dental implants last?
A 2026 review found 96.77% survival at one year and 94.77% at 36 months for mini implants holding lower dentures. A retrospective study with up to 15 years of follow-up found 86.3% cumulative survival, with more failures in implants narrower than 2.5 mm.
Are mini implants as good as standard implants?
They are best studied for holding lower dentures, where short-term survival is high. For other uses there is less evidence, so ask your dentist to compare both options for your case, including price.
Are mini dental implants available on the NHS?
Rarely. The NHS says implants are usually only available privately, and are sometimes available on the NHS for patients who cannot wear dentures for reasons such as mouth cancer or an accident.
